Comme des Garçons Homme Plus: Fearless Tailoring
Menswear has embraced a resurgence of tailored styles, a trend that Rei Kawakubo has consistently challenged, transformed, and celebrated. Her Comme des Garçons Homme Plus fall collection, aptly titled "Black Hole," presented a striking ensemble featuring fright wigs and face masks reminiscent of Jason Voorhees from the iconic "Friday the 13th" franchise.
Kawakubo's approach to black suit jackets and coats was akin to wielding a machete, skillfully hacking away at lapels, hems, and button stances, revealing the pristine white shirts or shimmering silver dresses beneath. However, her creations exuded an intriguing allure rather than fear, and often exuded a touch of elegance.
The collection exuded a sense of optimism, from the playful textures achieved through puckering and knotting to the uplifting slogans hand-painted on the double-layer black derby shoes: "Strong Will" and "My Energy Comes from Freedom." Kawakubo's grand finale was a spectacle, as her entire cast emerged in white variations of her signature silhouettes, all while French singer Michel Polnareff serenaded the audience with his 1966 hit, "Love Me, Please Love Me." Kawakubo had successfully guided us out of the metaphorical black hole.
She also ventured into uncharted territories, introducing bi-level Bermuda shorts with longer back legs and shorter fronts, as well as voluminous, clownish onesies elevated by expertly tailored spencer jackets, a trend that seems to be making a comeback this season. Her avant-garde jackets and flared shorts showcased an array of luxurious fabrics, including glossy lace, animal-print velvets, silver lamé, and metallic brocades.
As the collection progressed, a few models donned gleaming, high-tech muzzles, transforming them into futuristic versions of Hannibal Lecter. Despite the eerie resemblance, the overall atmosphere remained festive rather than frightening.
